If your favourite artist’s stream count suddenly dipped on Spotify, you’re not alone. If your streams as an artiste suddenly get reduced on spotify, you need to ask yourself some personal questions.
Over the last three months, some of the biggest names in the music industry especially from Africa —have quietly seen their numbers fall, Theartisteguide reports.
It’s super clear that a firm crackdown is underway and it’s focused on getting things done the right way such that true artistes gets the recognition they duly deserve.
The digital music service tightens the noose on fake streams
Since February 2025, the streaming giant has been adjusting all-time stream counts, citing violations of its strict anti-manipulation policies.
Several tracks across genres—and especially from Nigerian stars—have lost thousands of plays. Recently African pop star “Davido” lost thousands of streams on his hit singles “Awuke” and “Funds”.
While the platform hasn’t officially explained each deduction, this marks the third consecutive month of action against suspected fake streams.
Third-party services trigger Spotify penalties
According to Spotify’s policies, If an artiste uses a third-party services to inflate or boost streams, it is counted as a direct breach of their terms. And this comes with different penalties.
Artists risk having their music removed from playlists, losing royalties, or even having takedowns if caught.
As stated earlier, the music platform insists that these corrections aim to keep its charts fair and reflective of genuine fan engagement—not bots or paid boosts.
So, whether you’re just a listener or an artistes putting out music, this is a clear message from Spotify to keep it REAL. Only real streams will matter.
